What is the special Olympics
Celebrating values through sport. Guided by the values of inclusion, courage, respect, integrity, and excellence, SONZ provides opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete, to develop, and to be celebrated.
The National Summer Games is the pinnacle of this work – a celebration of inspiring performances, special moments of triumph, courage, connection, and a love for sport. With more than 1200 athletes competing in Christchurch from 10–14 December 2025, supported by families, coaches, and volunteers, the National Summer Games bring the “Be Part of Something Special” kaupapa to life.
